Crab King dodges detention: a Moscow court refused to arrest Igor Mikhnov, the owner of the Antey Group, despite a criminal case involving embezzlement and recent searches
As has become known, a court in Moscow refused to order the arrest of the owner of one of Russia’s largest fishing industry holdings (third-largest in crab harvesting), Igor Mikhnov. In recent times, Mikhnov’s companies have been engaged in promoting frozen crab on the Chinese market.
On Thursday evening, investigators asked the court to place Igor Mikhnov in custody for two months. Earlier, he had been charged with fraud involving embezzlement. However, the court refused to grant the investigators’ request.
The day before, searches were carried out in the offices of the Antey Group in Vladivostok, and Mikhnov was detained and taken to Moscow.
Igor Mikhnov (whose father, Ivan Mikhnov, is the founder and president of the Antey Group) is the main owner of the Vladivostok-based Antey Group, which is engaged in the extraction and processing of crab and fish. It owns more than 50 vessels that operate in the fishing grounds of the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bering Sea, the Sea of Japan, and the Barents Sea. Mikhnov’s partner is Arkady Pinchevsky, who previously headed the board of directors of the Moscow Crystal vodka plant and also served as deputy governor of Sakhalin Oblast.
In recent years, Mikhnov has frequently visited China and has often spoken about promoting frozen crab on the Chinese market.
